Chapter twenty-one

Julia, Again

Henry

Last night as I lay next to Amelia, I couldn’t bring myself to talk to her about Julia’s news. I couldn’t because I wanted to confirm whether she was telling the truth or not. Today, I prayed that she was playing some kind of prank on me, and the protruding belly was a prop from a costume store. I scheduled a meeting with her at a hotel restaurant a few miles away in the outskirts of the town. Troy had a scandal to keep at bay, and I couldn't afford to have another.

Troy texted me, something about Camille leaving the house. I replied, promising him I’d get back to him the moment I got out of here. I had a lot of things to handle myself. I parked at the end of the hotel parking lot, wearing a baseball cap as a perfect disguise. I would be cautious to look around for a hidden camera. Just before I could turn off the ignition, I heard a knock on my window. I sighed with relief as Julia appeared before me, and I stepped out to meet her. I looked down at her tummy, hoping I’d seen wrong the first time, but her bulge remained the same.

I walked her into the hotel’s restaurant; the quiet environment made me confident that no one would recognize either of us. I took the seat across from her; and when the waiter came to our table, I told him I wanted a cup of water.

“Same,” Julia told the waiter and looked at me. Her hands were folded across her breasts, a clear sign of her stubbornness.

“You won’t even look at me in the eyes,” Julia began. “Is that how much you hate me?”

“Hate is a strong word,” I replied. “I won’t say that I hate you. I’d say that I hate your obsessive actions.”

“Obsessive? You got me pregnant!”

“How much do you want, Julia? One hundred thousand dollars? Two hundred? Mention it and I’ll write a check right away.”

“Money?” Julia scoffed. “Do you think I’m here because of your money?”

“So, why do you want to ruin my marriage so much?”

“You think this pregnancy is going to ruin your marriage? This is your child crying out loud.”

“Nothing makes sense right now, Julia; you’ve been out of my life for seven months.”

“Yes,” Julia replied, “seven months is enough to carry a seven-month-old pregnancy.”

I bit my lip. “I'll get a doctor's report.” I relaxed in the chair as Julia reached for her bag.

“We used a condom every time.”

“A condom is only ninety nine percent effective. The one percent has a chance to bring a baby into the world.”

Julia finally brought out the doctor’s note from her bag. “I knew you would ask for it.”

I checked the medical report and confirmed it was real. The hospital’s stamp was clear, and I feared she may be telling the truth. I rubbed my eyes, and the waiter came back with our water just in time. I took a gulp from the glass before me and looked back at Julia.
